Amen.
You can die doing any sport, this does nothing but put fear into the hearts of people who are wanting to see what it is like to go beyond what they are used to and see sometime that is mysterious and beautiful.
Sharks mistake surfers and swimmers for seals and other food sources, that is why every where you read about sharks or going into places where sharks share the space there are advice about times when you should not go into the water because it is popular feeding times and the water is not clear and visible.
Sharks are wonderful creatures and everyone needs to know more about them and how to live with them, I know that I would not want to lose this beautiful species just because people are scared, misunderstand, or just want pieces of them.
We were put on this earth to live amongst the creatures who were here before us, but yet all we are doing is destroying all of the beauty that we were blessed enough to be included in.

Good Article but the one thing I tell my divers is ignore the brand and ignore the price, just go with what is comfortable. If you dont feel comfortable then you wont be happy and you wont want to dive so... what was the point of buying expensive equipment that will never be used?

A comfortable diver is a safe diver! you wouldnt go into space without a space suit that fits and works so dont go underwater without the same appreciation for your life support system.

Also I found only buying gear as you find u need it helps. That way you avoid a sales person flogging you gear that doesnt fit your needs.

Oh no! I thought it was bad when I had trouble equalizing and I was only in a class! My nose was giving me trouble and I usually don't have sinus congestion, but the conbination of 'forced' equalization and the 68 degree thermocline near the wreck (FL, USA) was enough to put me out for a bit afterwards. Sounds like you had a lot more trouble than me, and I need to buck up and do some acrobatics!

Yeah that photo is fake. Scuba divers are not killed by sharks. And to suggest that they are is pretty revolting to the scuba diving community because they are dedicated to fighting the JAWS stereotype that sharks are mindless killing machines. They are being slaughtered by the hundreds of millions by humans every year and they are amazing creatures that are completely misunderstood. They will be extinct within our lifetimes because of these stupid misconceptions.

So while your post's point that scuba diving can be dangerous and that is should always be approached with respect is valid...

Funny but recently a number of cell phones have been released that do actually work in up to 30' of water. I saw a dive team actually sending text messages to each other on a shallow reef just the other day. It was very very odd.

Divers should consider taking a navigation course to get better underwater navigational skills and the best way to not get lost assuming one lacks said navigation skills it to not dive with out a dive guide or stay with in a close distance to the dive boat.
